A slow twitch muscle (Type I) is aerobic. That means it is more efficient at using oxygen to create more fuel (known as ATP) for long term muscle contractions over an extended period of time. They fire slower than fast twitch fibers and can last for a long period of time before they fatigue. Therefore, slow twitch muscles are the primary workers during long runs like marathons, long bike rides, and swimming.
