The lactate threshold is also known as the Anaerobic Threshold. The exercise intensity or relative intensity at which blood lactate begins an abrupt increase above the baseline concentration. In the graph above, as the intensity increases the blue line shows the blood lactate slowly increasing. The point where the blue and red lines meet is the lactic threshold. At this point the Onset of Blood Lactate Accumulation (OBLA) increases rapidly. Lactic acid accumulates when the demand of oxygen during anaerobic exercise is no longer met. In fit individuals the OBLA usually occurs later, and with higher intensities of physical exertion.
