A muscle contraction that produces tension that is equal to the resistance force is called an isometric contraction. Durning this type of contraction the muscle does not get longer or shorter and everything is held still. A popular way that this type of contraction is used in a workout is for burnouts. That means that you hold the contraction as long as you can until you reach muscular failure. Examples of this are holding yourself in a wall sit, plank, or a bridge like in the picture above.
