Osteoporosis is a condition when bone mineral density and bone mass become reduced to critically low levels. The risk of fractures is increased at this point. As we age bone mineral density reduces, so elderly are automatically at a higher risk. Women are at a higher risk especially post menopause because the absence of estrogen can decrease bone mineral density.
